Witsel: Borussia can advance to UCL final

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel told about the team’s goals for the new season and the desire to play in the Champions League final.

Last season, Borussia Dortmund were close to the German championship title for the first time since 2012. However, Bayern noticed it in time and took away the first place from the Black-and-Yellows by the end of the championship. A very similar story was in the Champions League. Although Borussia took the first place in the group with Atletico Madrid, they were confidently stopped by Tottenham London in the round of 16, which eventually advanced to the semi-finals of the most prestigious club tournament in Europe.

One of the leaders of Lucien Favre’s team Axel Witsel shared his opinion regarding the new season in an interview to Kicker TV. The Belgian stated that the side from Dortmund has ambitions to advance to the Champions League final and also told about the goals for the championship,

“As for the championship, we are learning from the mistakes of the last season. Plus we signed several footballers and have an even more quality squad than last season. I think, we have become stronger.

Bayern lost Robben and Ribery, but purchased Coutinho and Perisic. I am confident, they will be even stronger with this couple. It is obvious that we will have to fight them until the very end, but first and foremost we have to concentrate on ourselves and not think about what Bayern does.”

Although Borussia looked extremely confident in the first two matches of the championship, but still lost away in the third round to Union Berlin 3:1. The thing is that the Black-and-Yellows’ squad is still not fully coordinated. Mats Hummels, who once again arrived to Signal Iduna Park requires time to play well with Akanji and Zagadou in the center of defense. The same goes for Schulz. One should not even talk about the line of attack.

Borussia took themselves Paco Alcacer, who continues scoring and making assists on a constant basis and the same goes for Jadon Sancho. Whereas everyone understands that the Englishman will not stay at Borussia for long. That is why they got Thorgan Hazard in the summer transfer window.

The Black-and-Yellows got many perspective players, but in the club style conditions, their main disadvantage is the absence of time for lengthy restructuring. Constant change of young performers will only bring situational success, like Ajax in the previous season of the Champions League or Sevilla several years earlier in the Europa League. It is time for Borussia to turn into a top club with their own Blackjack, Mario Gotze and Hummels.
