Messi took sixth Ballon D’Or

Lionel Messi won the World Player of the Year award according to French magazine France Football for the sixth time.

Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo were in the final four of the best footballers of the world  apart from the decorated Argentine according to the French edition. The quartet was concluded by van Dijk’s teammate, Mane.

The Portuguese from Juventus, who did not even show up to the ceremony, got the bronze this time; therefore, as it was presumed, the main choice was between the Barcelona forward and the Liverpool defender.

A few days before the ceremony, there were rumors in the media that Messi will take the award, as there was information about making an interview with the Argentine’s family members for a movie, which was shown during the award ceremony. That is what happened. Lionel won his sixth Ballon D’Or and is now a sole leader by the number of the awards (Ronaldo has five).

Having analyzed the situation for the past year, one can understand that Messi deserved another of his trophies for the most goals scored in the league, having gotten the Golden Boot before that. But in terms of victories in big tournaments he only has triumph in La Liga. Van Dijk did win the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup. Took the second place in the EPL and the Nations League, but in opinion of the people, who conduct the prestige award, it wasn’t enough.

Van Dijk remained humble in his commentaries, paying respect to Messi,

“The sixth Ballon D’Or is worth respect. I was close, but unfortunately no one was better.

I am proud of what I have achieved. Let’s hope, that someday I will be able to win, but it will be difficult, while such players as Messi and Ronaldo still play.”

By far, Ballon D’Or remains in the hands of La Liga representatives for the past 11 years. Before that, Ronaldo won it in Manchester United squad. This season the Portuguese clearly needs to once again prove his grandeur, which will be hard to do, when he is about to be 35 and under the management of Maurizio Sarri.

Liverpool will hardly be able to win in the international arena for the second time. Klopp’s team is oriented on the EPL; therefore, one should not expect significant changes in Ballon D’Or sphere next season. It is up to Manchester City. Maybe, someone from Pep Guardiola’s gang will be able to bring back the award to Manchester, as Ronaldo did it back in 2008.
