National team of Belgium extends contract with Martinez

The national team of Belgium will not part ways with Roberto Martinez up until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Spaniard, who previously managed Everton from Liverpool, moved to the national team of Belgium in 2016 after the European championship in France. In the very first match under Martinez’s management, the Red Devils lost to the national team of Spain 0:2 and after that they had a lossless streak of 24 matches, which ended in the 2018 World Cup semi-final. Nevertheless, the Belgians took the bronze of the Mondial in Russia and also qualified for the 2020 European championship without any problems, having won all matches in the qualification.

Considering the fact that Euro 2020 has been moved to the next year, the Royal Belgian Football Association had to make concessions and offer the manager a two-year contract, which will also cover the 2022 World Cup.

With Roberto Martinez, the national team of Belgium is at the top of the FIFA ranking ahead of acting world champions France, and the current Copa America winners Brazil. Behind them are England, Uruguay and Croatia with Portugal.

Despite the ranking, Belgium still haven’t won a single big tournament. Apart from the bronze at the latest Mondial, the Red Devils added the silver of Euro 1980 and the bronze of Euro 1972 to their asset. Out of great triumphs, the Belgians only have the Olympic gold from Antwerp in 1920.

Considering the current roster of the national team of Belgium, Roberto Martinez has all chances to  do what everyone else couldn’t. Next year, team Belgium can win the European championship cup, taking advantage of destabilization of the national team of Germany, the Englishmen’s insecurity in defense, the Netherlands’ inexperience, the aging Portugal and team France’s exhaustion.

The Belgians have everything they need. The national team is confidently going after the first title in their history and the only thing that can prevent that is underestimation of the opponents together with overestimation of their capabilities (as it was in the match with the national team of Japan at the 2018 WC. In all other components, the national team looks even stronger than France, considering Martinez’s tactical flexibility as a manager.
