Niko Kovac takes Monaco

Niko Kovac takes Monaco

Bayern Munich former manager Niko Kovac has become the new manager of royal Monaco.

After unsuccessful transfer policy and subsequently terrible results with Leonardo Jardim in the lead, Monaco cannot return to the former level for several years now, which was under the Portuguese specialist. Back then, the Monegasques even moved PSG from the first spot in the league and played in the Champions League semi-final three years ago.

But then there was the invitation of Thierry Henry, who only made the situation worse, the return of Jardim, so that he would once again raise the youth of Kylian Mbappe’s level, as well as the invitation of Roberto Moreno, in the incinerated field.

The team looked well under the Spaniard and even had an opportunity to cling onto a place in European competitions. But the quarantine and the decision of French football authorities to end the season played its part. Moreno was fired six months after his appointment and Niko Kovac came to replace him, known to many for experience in the Croatia national team, Eintracht and Bayern.

At first glance it seems that Kovac is a controversial figure for the Monegasques. For the most part of his managerial career, the Croat taught his teams defensive football, considering the lack of quality players in the offense of the national team of Croatia and Eintracht. Nevertheless his German Eagles thanks to confident defense managed to get into the Europa League semi-final. But he did not manage to reunite attack, midfield and defense harmonically at Bayern.

Monaco stand out from the rest of the French teams with incredible performance. Slimani and Ben Yedder have become a nightmare of Ligue 1 and scored 27 goals in 28 matches between them. Whereas Monaco defense conceded 44 goals and is rightfully considered one of thee worst in the league.

If we consider Kovac as a manager capable of fixing the game in the back, then the decision is quite logical. But at the same time he can disrupt the coherent move from defense to attack in the Monegasques, which risks not to give the proper effect. There are already rumors that the Croat is interested in Mario Gotze, who will become a free agent in the summer. The position on which the German plays is fundamental in the current formation of the Monegasques’ game. Therefore, Kovac is risking to destroy the flimsy mechanism, built by Moreno, in the very first month of his work.
