Napoli need Ukrainian diaspora at club

Neapolitan Napoli intend to sign two Dynamo Kyiv defenders, Illya Zabarnyi and Denys Popov.

Serie A pays more and more attention to players from the post-Soviet countries. After Milan took Andriy Shevchenko and won more than one title, enough time passed before the clubs cast their eyes to the east of Europe again. The first was Atalanta, which were not afraid to first take Ruslan Malinovskyi under their wing, then Alexei Miranchuk and finally Viktor Kovalenko.

Now, looking at the successful performances of the Ukrainian midfielder for the Bergamasque, Napoli also decided to take a chance and sign a couple of Ukrainians in defense. They are Illya Zabarnyi and Denys Popov, who became the fundamental link in the triumph of the Kievites in the domestic arena with the arrival of Mircea Lucescu. Moreover, Popov has been followed in Italy since the 2019 World Cup, when the Ukrainians won the youth world championship.

Zabarnyi has already played against the Netherlands at the European Championship, becoming the youngest player (18 years and 285 days) in the history of the Ukraine national team. At the same time, Illya showed himself well during the season, having played 36 matches in all tournaments for Dynamo. Popov's results are slightly more modest, 25 matches last season in a white and blue jersey.

The fact that guys have great potential is a fact. Denis is four years older than his club and national team partner, but is not progressing so quickly. Perhaps that is why Andriy Shevchenko gave preference to Zabarnyi in the duel with the Netherlands. We doubt that a club like Dynamo will release two central defenders at once. At best, one of the guys will be able to try his hand in Europe. But they need to get out of the greenhouse conditions before Andriy Yarmolenko did it.

The only caveat, as for us, is that at Napoli they will not have enough playing practice. Plus, the team will be coached by Luciano Spalletti, which also does not play into the hands of young footballers. If Napoli sells Koulibaly or Manolas in the summer, then it will be possible to talk about transfers of the Ukrainians in a more positive way. In the meantime, it is more like Dynamo’s PR and pushing the price of players after one good season.
