Lunin once again needed by Real Madrid?

Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin will spend the next season on loan. Presumably, at Espanyol.

Back in the day, the transfer of promising 19-year-old goalkeeper from Zorya Luhansk Andriy Lunin to Real Madrid for 8.5 million euros surprised many experts. It would seem, why at that time Los Blancos, which won three Champions League titles in a row, took this player? After all, in the Spanish expanses there are dozens of no less talented goalkeepers. The only one who won in this situation is Lunin himself, who exchanged the stagnant Ukrainian league for a place in the most popular club in the world. And even the competition with the great and powerful Thibaut Courtois did not particularly bother ambitious Andriy.

As it turned out, in vain. Immediately after the purchase, Lunin was sent on loan to Leganes. The move was logical and correct, but not completely. Back then, Pepineros’ number one was the favorite of the public, Ivan Cuellar, who served as the captain at the same time. He was the main goalkeeper for the whole season, and Lunin took part in only seven matches of the league and the Cup.

In the summer, the Ukrainian returned to Real Madrid, but again not for long. In the 2019/20 season, he was loaned to Valladolid. There, Andriy entered the pitch only twice, and he was returned back in the winter. He simply could not handle the competition with Jordi Masip, who was not going to lose it to the junior.

Then Lunin was sent to Segunda, to Real Oviedo. And there the Ukrainian gatekeeper finally became the main one. In the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, he made twenty appearances. In the summer of 2020, Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane announced that Lunin would become the No. 2 goalkeeper at the club. But in fact, for Andriy, the 2020/21 season fell out of his biography. The only appearance on the field happened in the Cup, from where Los Blancos immediately dropped out from modest Alcoyano. Back then, Lunin conceded twice and proved himself not from the best side.

New league season - new disappointments. The positions of 30-year-old Thibaut Courtois are still unshakable. Neither injury, nor even the coronavirus can take out the Belgian. Lunin was handed the Cup again. This time the Ukrainian played two matches and never left sheet clean. The day before, he finally made his debut in La Liga for Real Madrid. And again, defeat 0:1 from Atlético. Carlo Ancelotti praised the Ukrainian, but a day later he gave the go-ahead for his next loan.

This time Lunin is going to be sheltered by Espanyol, a strong middle-tier side in the peloton. The main goalkeeper of the Parrots is 40-year-old Diego Lopez, who is about to retire. Behind him is the young prospect Joan Garcia and the perpetual reservist Oier Olazábal. We won’t be surprised if Andriy Lunin finally wins the competition and becomes the main goalkeeper of the La Liga club.

We believe that 33 matches in four years in Spain is negligible for the young and promising goalkeeper. Lunin is 23, and he is gradually disappearing from the radar. His potential is insane, but it is almost impossible to reveal it behind the back of one of the best keepers on the planet, Thibaut Courtois. A year at Espanyol as close to the line-up will benefit Andriy. And in 2024, his contract with Real Madrid ends - it remains to be patient just a little bit. And then the final and irrevocable change of registration is possible. Even with the return to his homeland.
