Milan win Scudetto for the first time in 11 years!

A 3:0 away victory over Sassuolo in the last Serie A matchday brought Milan such a long-awaited title! Nineteenth in history and the first one since 2011.

For the second year in a row, the Scudetto goes to the city of Milan. And while Inter became triumphant in the 2020/21 season, this time the holiday is on Rossoneri street. For the entire campaign, Milan earned 86 points, which was more than enough for first place. The progress of the team under the leadership of Pioli is visible to the naked eye.

Even before the global coronavirus pandemic, Milan were a faceless middle-tier team with weak prospects of finishing in the Europa League zone. And this is despite all the ambitions and regular financial spending. But the three-month sanitary break seemed to breathe new life into the Devils. In the summer of 2020, they made an incredible spurt and took sixth place. And a year later, the Milanese were already second, and in the last five rounds they got four victories with one draw and an impressive goal difference of 14:0. Rossoneri finished powerfully this time. The numbers are even more impressive - nine wins, two draws and goal statistics of 19:2. Due to this, Milan managed to overtake Napoli and Inter and win the long-awaited Scudetto.

What is the strength of today's Milan? First, it’s disciplined defensive game. For the entire league season, Rossoneri conceded only 31 goals - the best indicator alongside Napoli. Moreover, the main pair of center-backs were 24-year-old Fikayo Tomori and 21-year-old Pierre Kalulu. Now these players are highly rated in the transfer market. Whether Milan will keep them is another question. Maignan, who came to the club last summer from Lille and immediately won the league's best goalkeeper award, is also important.

Two more leaders of the Devils are the impeccable 22-year-old midfielder Sandro Tonali and his peer, forward Rafael Leao. The Portuguese did give a breathtaking finish - in the last five matchesб he scored twice and made six assists. With such a game, Leao ousted Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the line-up, and also got into the shortlist of possible Real Madrid transfers. Let’s not forget about the role of the veteran Olivier Giroud, who scored twice in the golden match against Sassuolo.

Last summer, Milan abandoned their main stars - goalkeeper Donnarumma and midfielder Calhanoglu. But without them, the team rallied around the coach Stefano Pioli and produced an incredible result. The best for the 56-year-old coach, who, after bronze with Lazio in the 2014/15 campaign, was on the sidelines in Italian football. The young (and in some ways even junior) Pioli’s team has reached a new level of development and is ready to conquer not only Serie A, but also the Champions League. However, for this Rossoneri will have to carefully work on the transfer market. They have already announced the transfer of Liverpool forward Divock Origi, who decided not to renew the contract with the Merseysiders and the Devils will get him for free. The Milanese should also strengthen their midfield and increase competition in the center of defense.

We think Milan's success in Serie A is fully deserved. Stefano Pioli put together a young star team at San Siro that knows how to defend competently, attack sharply, and also has an incredible will to win. Rossoneri took full advantage of the misfires of direct competitors and won gold medals. Now they have to stay at the top, and this is always more difficult than getting there.
