Oblak to continue career in North London?

Iconic Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak could leave the club in the summer of 2023. Tottenham, who are already preparing for the departure of the main goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, are interested in the services of the Slovenian.

Oblak moved to Madrid eight years ago, and since then has put a lot of effort into all the modern achievements of Atlético. In the 2020/21 season, Los Colchoneros became the champions of Spain, and five years earlier they reached the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid only in a penalty shootout. For all the time at the Metropolitano, Jan spent about 400 matches, and over the past five years he missed only two (!) La Liga games.

It should also be noted that the Slovenian goalkeeper has already won five Trofeo Zamora, which is given for the fewest goals conceded in Primera. According to this stat, the 29-year-old Slovenian caught up with the legendary Antoni Ramallets and Victor Valdez. It is largely thanks to him that Atlético stay at the top of the peloton, as the quality of Los Colchoneros’ center backs gets worse and worse every year.

At this age, Oblak has at least six more years of active career ahead of him, and we’re not sure if he wants to end it in Madrid, even despite the contract that is valid until 2028. Under the leadership of Simeone, Atlético are performing weaker and weaker – we’re not sure that next year we will see the club in the Champions League. But Tottenham, who are interested in the Slovenian, under the leadership of Conte, have much more serious ambitions.

The Spurs have a goalkeeper, and he’s one of the best in the world. Hugo Lloris has been defending the colors of Tottenham since 2012, and during that time he reached the final of Euro 2016, and also won the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League with France. In the Premier League, Lloris did not have trophies, but a stable place at the heart of such a respected club is still a serious achievement. However, Hugo is already 35 years old and the end of his career is near. Therefore, the Spurs begin to look for a replacement for him. In terms of playing qualities, Oblak is very close to Lloris - if Tottenham boss Levy does not spare money for this transfer, then the goalkeeper issue at the club will be decided for years to come.

In our opinion, Oblak’s transfer to North London is still unlikely. As one of Atlético's highest paid players and with a lucrative six-year deal under his belt, the Slovenian is unlikely to move to a club only marginally stronger than Los Colchoneros. Jan would still remain in Madrid, waiting for offers from more status teams and would try to rewrite a few more La Liga records.
