Liverpool reborn?

Liverpool reborn?

On Sunday, 5 March, Liverpool played Manchester United in the twenty-sixth round of the English Premier League. Many experts expected a very competitive battle, but Klopp's men shocked them with an incredible 7-0 victory!

Before the start of the match, Liverpool were in sixth place, slowly rising to the fight for the Champions League zone. After a disastrous January, the Reds at least adjusted the game in defense, and before meeting with United they did not concede in four rounds in a row. The Red Devils confidently went third and showed very solid football. They had eliminated Barcelona from the Europa League the previous week and had also beaten Newcastle in the League Cup final. In general, a very even match was planned with an unpredictable outcome.

The pitch was still competitive in the first half, despite a goal late in the first half from Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman found a worthy response to the previous action of the Mancunians - fortunately for the fans of the Reds, Casemiro's scoring shot was disallowed due to offside. During the break, Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag apparently ordered to act more openly, which eventually ruined the team.

Incredibly, in the second half, Liverpool scored six (!) goals against the Red Devils at once for every taste. Doubles were scored by Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, and the last accurate shot was netted by Roberto Firmino, who is guaranteed to leave Anfield in the summer. The Merseysiders succeeded in literally everything - wing crosses, passes that cut through the United defense, solid counterattacks, lay-offs ... Even most of the rebounds were in favor of Klopp's men.

The result of this match will give Liverpool additional self-confidence. Considering the defeat of fourth-placed Tottenham, the Merseysiders are already three points behind the Champions League zone with one game in hand. It should be noted that most of the leaders of the club have healed their injuries and are now ready to spurt at the end of the season. After 2-5 away from Real, the Reds are likely to leave the Champions League and focus only on the Premier League. But Manchester United may well take the Europa League, and enter the top 4 in England - against the background of the failure in the 2021/22 campaign, this will be a decisive step forward.

What happened last weekend at Anfield is more of an anomaly than a pattern. In fact, Liverpool showed the highest conversion of scoring chances, and Manchester United crumbled after two painful blows at the beginning of the second half. How soon the Red Devils will recover from such a shock and whether such a success of the Merseysiders is not accidental - we will see in the very near future.
