Is Werner on his way to oblivion?

RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner could return to the English Premier League, where he previously played for Chelsea! The once very productive player is now going through a difficult period in his career and is losing competition for a place in the Red Bulls' starting lineup.

During the period from 2016 to 2020, Werner was the leading forward of RB Leipzig and scored 78 goals in 127 matches for the club in the league alone! It is not surprising that more reputable clubs became interested in the scorer. As a result, a transfer to Chelsea and victory in the Champions League in the first season in London. However, the 27-year-old German never played a leading role at Stamford Bridge.

Firstly, he was never able to adapt to the demands of the Premier League straight away, and secondly, Werner became a victim of coaching leapfrog at Chelsea, when he was most often a rotation player and did not play in a core position. Just 10 goals in two campaigns in London speaks volumes, but Timo was considered the main German striker of the generation and the successor to Miroslav Klose himself in the national team.

Having returned to RB Leipzig, Werner lost his place in the starting lineup there too. Now he is content with, at best, coming on as a substitute, and the younger and hungry Openda and Sesko, as well as the veteran Poulsen, are getting playing practice. It is unlikely that Timo is ready to endure his status in the team for a long time, so he is slowly thinking about changing his club registration. The Red Bulls will not prevent this, given their transfer policy.

Most likely, Werner will return to the English Premier League, where he will find refuge in some middle-tier club. So far there has been reported interest in the German from Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham, with the third option being the most attractive. If Timo moves to the Hammers this winter, he will have time to participate with them in the Europa League playoffs, while at other clubs he will spend a quiet and uneventful season in the middle of the Premier League standings.

At 27 years old, Timo Werner still has a chance to return to his previous level, but for this he needs to leave RB Leipzig. Even a few months in a simpler team can inspire the German to new scoring feats. The main thing is to gain trust from the coach and avoid serious injuries.
