Manchester United – Liverpool: when there is no favorite

Manchester United – Liverpool: when there is no favorite

In the 30th round of the English Premier League, Manchester United will host at Old Trafford their eternal rivals from the kingdom of Merseyside.

There is already many material has been written about the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool for us to focus on the essence of the feud in the North West derby, as this match is called at the Albion. From the gaming point of view, the teams are pretty equal. This fact made bookmakers think about who is the favorite in the forthcoming encounter. There is no definite answer.

Manchester United couldn’t get into the gaming rhythm for half of February and because of that had two defeats from Tottenham (2:0) and Newcastle (1:0). This influenced the layout in the EPL tournament table and let Liverpool shorten the distance to two points. Thankfully for Jose Mourinho, Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku, who played the decisive role in victories over Chelsea (2:1) and Crystal Palace (2:3), gained shape. Pogba began treating his role on the pitch differently, after the Portuguese manager left him on the bench in two matches. And the goalkeeper David de Gea keeps rescuing his team in key moments, as it was in an away match against Sevilla (0:0).

Liverpool do not seem to have the same problems as Manchester United. The last defeat of Jurgen Klopp’s men is dated back to the 27th January, when the Reds lost in the FA Cup to West Bromwich (2:3). Liverpool have not lost for a month and a half now, destroying every defense on their way with the offensive force, consisting of Mane, Firmino and Salah. With the arrival of Virgil van Dijk and the replacement of Mignolet for Karius, the team’s defense also improved. Out of seven last matches, the Merseysiders ended five of those flawlessly, which says a lot, considering their attacking team status.

After the second match against Porto in the Champions League (0:0), Klopp said:

“The squad rotation is very important if we want to continue to play as intensively. We needed to find the right first team variant. Now we can normally prepare for the Saturday match against Manchester United. Henderson? Joran has a contusion”.

Two biggest opposites in the English football will meet on Saturday. On one side of the manager zone Jurgen Klopp will swing his hands expressively urging the team to give the last strength in the pressure on rivals’ half of the field. On the other one will be Jose Mourinho, decisively trying to achieve success thanks to a powerful defense. The former midfielder of London Arsenal regarding this match said the following:

“I am confident, that Liverpool will not lose. It will be a game in which it is important to score the first goal and I don’t think, that United’s defense line will withstand against the confident and swift attack of the Merseysiders. United, in their turn, are not going to play very offensively. I think it will be an equal battle for the second place.”

Because of such differences in performance and philosophy, most experts paradoxically tend to predict a draw in the 200th North West derby (3.40), 1:1 score to be exact (6.50).
