Liverpool make life harder for themselves

In the central match of the thirty seventh round of the English Premier League, Liverpool lost to London Chelsea and delayed the advancement to the Champions League group stage.

Chelsea chances on advancement to the Champions League for the next season were phantom ones before the weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s team, shabby after the performance in the most prestigious club tournament in Europe, went out on a match with the six-point advantage and point changes in the squad. Clyne played on the right wing of Livepool’s defense instead of the usual Alexander-Arnold. Nevertheless, the 19-year old Englishman shifted to a midfielder position, having replaced Jordan Henderson. The predicted roster of fighters appeared in Chelsea squad from the very first minutes: Rudiger once again left Christensen on the bench, just like Moses did with Zappacosta.

From the very first minute Liverpool went on the attack on Courtois’ goal, however of the attacking three of Mane, Firmino and Salah did not result in opening the score on the table of Stamford Bridge. Chelsea used one of few counter-attacks and Giroud scored the ball to the net of Karuis with a header.

In the second half of the game, Antonio Conte gave instructions to the team to play more on counter-attacks. Liverpool had ball possession of 68% in total, which is suicidal-like for Klopp’s side. The Reds cannot achieve a result in positional attacks, which is reflected by 12 draws this season mainly against the middle class teams and outsiders of the league. The Blues won using Liverpool’s strategy. Hazard skillfully dragged the ball from the midfield to the opponents’ penalty box and laterals passed on Giroud.

Jurgen Klopp told about it about after the match:

“I am not pleased with the result, but the game in total can be evaluated quite positively. Playing against Chelsea one should avoid long passes, but we missed it, and it is hard to fight against Giroud and as a result we conceded a goal”.

The German manager did not forget to remind about the team’s fatigue after the Champions League matches:

“Were we affected by fatigue? Our roster is not very big, we have injured players, therefore the boys after recovery cannot return to the rhythm immediately”.

This way Chelsea remained on the fifth position but shortened the gap to the Champions League zone by two points. The gap to the third place, on which Liverpool are situated, is three points, but the Merseysiders played one match more than Tottenham and Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp and company will keep the place in the top four, if they defeat Brighton on the last round. The Reds need this to occupy a place in the UCL despite the result of the final with Real. The Londoners will have to fight against  Huddersfield and Newcastle hoping for Tottenham’s in the games against Newcastle and Leicester.
