Lyon follow Monaco path

Lyon follow Monaco path

Lyon occupied the third position in the French championship last season and thanks to that qualified to the Champions League. However interest in the Lions’ footballers may be crossed out by team’s success.

In 2016/2017 season, Monaco reached the Champions League semi-final and won Ligue 1. This event shook Europe as the hegemon of the French football PSG conceded the first position to the recent inhabitants of the second division.  However, smart transfer policy and scout work gave their results and Monaco ended up in top four strongest teams in Europe. In the summer transfer window already, Bakayoko and Mendy left the club and a little bit later Mbappe left the Monegasques. In May this year Fabinho moved to Anfield and Sidibe with Lemar are getting ready to move to Atletico.

Lyon are trying to follow the same path. The team may have not advanced to the Champions League semi-final, but was close to the Europa League quarterfinal. That is considering that for the past two years the Olympians’ camp was left by Lacazette, Tolisso and Gonalons. Even despite transfers of leaders, Lyon achieves result on a domestic arena and does not fall into the mud in international club tournaments.

However, yesterday Milan announced the purchase of Memphis Depay, who has gained shape in France. The player scored 19 goals and made 13 assists in 36 matches in the league only. The Dutchman will cope with adaptation in Italy as he already has gaming experience in the leagues of England and France. But this transfer is not the last one for Lyon. Rubin are hunting for Ben Arfa and Liverpool are preparing a jersey to present Fekir. Therefore the club will have to cope with hardship next season already because of departure of the key players as while selling footballers, the owners are not in a hurry to please the head coach Bruno Genesio with purchases.

Monaco and Lyon are similar to each other in terms of marketing. Both clubs raise and develop footballers later having a material benefit from them. However, Monaco showed efficiency, as for five years it has qualified for the Champions League. Lyon has only just begun the way to return the former glory and already sold several basic footballer. The summer will show will the Lions be able to replace the departed Lacazette, Tolisso as well as Fekir, Ben Arfa and Depay in perspective.
