Egypt did not withhold a draw with Uruguay

The Egypt national team lost to Uruguay, having conceded a goal in end of the match. Throughout the encounter, the footballers from Africa managed to contain Cavani and Suarez, whose play didn’t go well from the very first minutes.

Egypt are rightfully considered a dark horse of the group A. Hector Cuper’s team was taken into account, when the world found out about the phenomenal Mohamed Salah. However, the Pharaohs proved in Yekaterinburg that even without the Liverpool player they can fight La Celeste.

In the beginning of the match both national teams increased the tempo of the game, which in the wake of the match between Russia and the Saudis seemed a huge difference. Uruguay predictably held the ball to themselves, developing position attacks in hope for Suarez and Cavani. However, the Barcelona forward’s miss from three meters made one doubt his readiness to start the goal count in the Mondial. From the twenty-fifth minute Uruguay accelerated and constantly torn Egypt’s defense and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy in particular. However, the goalkeeper was ready for the shots of Suarez and Cavani, therefore he coped perfectly well.

Thanks to high pressing and counter-pressing, the Egypt national team  did not let Uruguay brng the ball to the penalty box. Elneny and the team captain Ahmed Fathy were distinguished especially. The latter did not let Arrascaeta and Caceres get to the wing, and the Arsenal halfback developed attacks. Considering all that, Salahwas strongly missed, able to catch the ball on the edge and escape from defenders. However, Hector Cuper preserved the forward for a more important match with Russia,

“Salah is a very important player for us, he can help in offense, he will bring a lot to our play in the next match, when he will be able to go out on the pitch.

There is a risk of relapse, therefore we did not let him out today. But he will in shape for the next match.

We consult with the medical staff. They said that there is a risk, if he gets a blow to the same spot or falls badly. But they say that there will be no such risk before the game with Russia, Salah will be completely ready.”

The first and only goal in the match was scored by Gimenez on the 89th minute. The Atletico defender used anthropometric advantage and Elneny’s sluggishness in the penalty box during a free kick. Nevertheless, Egypt still have chances to advance to the play-offs as they showed that they can act like a team and compact in pressing even with the absence of Salah. Cuper taught footballers quickly connect to the attack and manage to work in defense. Therefore, it will not be easy for Russia against one of the best African teams.
