England claim their intentions

The national team of England in the first match of the World Cup defeated the national team of Tunisia, 1:2, but not without problems. Whereas Gareth Southgate’s team created more moments than other teams in the tournament until today.

The qualification stage for the Mondial began with a scandal for England and Sam Allardyce’s dismissal. Gareth Southgate, who came to replace him, did not offer any new extraordinary steps, therefore the Three Lions’ matches looked pragmatically and dull. Before the tournament in Russia, the fans expected that the play sketch will not change and did not take England seriously, as a contender for the title. However, the first minutes of the match with Tunisia completely destroyed this hypothesis. Not a single national team has overtook the Englishmen by the xG indicator, even without a couple not appointed  penalty shots on Harry Kane.

Pressing on the opposite side of the pitch, the swift shift from defense to attack thanks to the midfield line, where Henderson supported partners with passes Pirlo style, led eventually to a minimal victory for the nominal guests. Only Jesse Lindgard, who lost opportunities to increase the score and Kyle Walker, who acted on a position of a central defender, fell out of total picture. Because of the Manchester City full-back, Tunisia scored their only goal in the match from a penalty shot. However, Harry Kane’s double level the attempts of the African side to cling to the points in the match.

Even the head coach of the national team of England Gareth Southgate evaluated the efforts of the team, having claimed after the game,

“Even if it was 1:1, I would be happy. The most important thing is to express yourself on the pitch. There were things in the match, we could not control, but we reacted well on those. We created many dangerous moments and we only lacked cold-blood closure of the attacks. We created opportunities and not only threw the ball to the goal. We perfectly worked out the home preparations, which brought us victory.“

Unlike previous tournaments, where the Englishmen were the favorites, they do not have the load of responsibility over them. Sterling, Lindgard, Rashford may not act in cold blood due to age, but several matches later their jim-jams will pass and the Three Lions team will seriously express themselves on the tournament. Only Kane is coping with the task right now, but considering mobile midfield and quality vertical play, England should be expected at least in the World Cup play-offs.
