Atletico Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup

Atletico Madrid defeated Real in Tallinn UEFA Super Cup final and took the cup, not being the favorites of the confrontation, according to bookmakers.

Most of all, changes in a team concerned Real. After the victory in the Champions League final, Zinedine Zidane left Los Blancos camp and a bit later Cristiano Ronaldo left Santiago Bernabeu. As the yesterday match showed, the departure of the main acting figures of the club practically did not reflect on Los Blancos’ play. The team worked on old notes of the French manager, developing attacks from the midfield and then changed to wings, where Bale and Asensio worked.

Nevertheless, Atletico players cooled down Lopetegui team’s impulses on the first minute. After the usual vertical attack through midfield, Diego Costa pushed through to the penalty box and shot through Navas from an acute angle. The goalkeeper’s mistake cost the team a conceded goal in the beginning of the match and probably a place in the line-up for the debut match in the championship. However, later Real equalized with the help of Bale’s cross on Benzema and the forward concluded the pass, having caught Oblak in half-position and by the middle of the second half went ahead because of the penalty and Juanfran’s hand play.

Atletico didn’t make any more mistakes, which cannot be said about Real’s manager Julen Lopetegui. The manager took away Casemiro after the second goal, understanding that the Indians will go ahead through midfield with great power. Three minutes later, Diego Costa doubled his goals after Correa’s passing with Marcelo’s zone, who once again proved his inability to play in defense on a high level.

Having transferred the game to extra-time, Atletico with Saul and Koke’s goals took revenge on Real for the two lost Champions League finals after the main time. In the after-match press conference, Lopetegui claimed,

“In finals, the ones who make more mistakes usually lose and Atletico are experts in taking advantage of this. When we showed better play, they made the score 2:2. Atletico took advantage of the moments they had well. In the extra-time, I had an impression, that in the first half of it we controlled the game more, but the opponents made the score 3:2 in their favor. Tried to risk more and because of that moved away from our style of play.”

Atletico without Diego Simeone at the sideline achieve a cup once again and judging by ambitions, play and roster, it is probably not the last one this season. Real showed that in two months of Lopetegui’s work, the style of play remains the same and the loss of Ronaldo in unnoticeable compared to mistakes in defense by Varane and Ceballos.
