Henry will have to cleanse Augean stables

This weekend Thierry Henry will spend his first match as Monaco head coach against Strasbourg. However, the former striker of Barcelona and Arsenal has the task to fix the Monegasque management mistakes, in particular management and selection, who allowed the collapse of the sympathetic team of 2017.

Within four years of his work at Monaco, Leonardo Jardim gathered a decent squad, which advanced to the Champions League semi-final and took away the French League title for one year from the Ligue 1 hegemons – PSG. However, a wasteful transfer policy, the sale of leading performers and lazy work of selection workers led to the collapse of the team. This season the Monegasques are occupying 18th position and terrify with their game. Individualists from different parts of the world are gathered in the squad, and many of them do not match the ambitions of the Russian President Dmitriy Rybolovlyev’s project.

The club has called up the local and European legend Thierry Henry to save the situation. Having worked as an assistant at Arsenal and Belgium national team, as well as having played under the management of Wenger and Guardiola, Henry is able to offer something. However, all these clubs and national teams were stuffed with high-class performers, which Monaco lack. The game was built on attack and Wenger’s attempts to copy Guardiola’s style couldn’t see only a blind man. A similar situation was in Belgium, where together with Hazard, De Bruyne and Mertens, not a single Monaco player can stand against. But the Monegasques need to get out from the relegation zone and therefore a task to surprise fans with beautiful football fades into the background. But as there wasn’t a conditional free Sam Allardyce, Rybolovlyev decided to take a risk. Henry also took a risk taking Monaco and not Aton Villa, where he would not have pressure.

Henry went in the footsteps of his Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville, who took problematic Valencia as a first managerial experience. But the Frenchman framed himself, as he was loved and honored in the principality, as the best player of the academy, and what will happen after his arrival is unclear. Henry’s arrival to Monaco is an indicator, which will show whether he becomes a second Zidane or the second Neville but for now the balance is leaning towards the second option due to the number of problems at Louis II.
