Napoli completes minimum task

In the fourth round of the Champions League group stage, the Neapolitan Napoli achieved a draw in the match with PSG, having stayed  in the second position in the quartet with six points. The Italian team did not lose to the Parisians in two matches and even excelled Thomas Tuchel’s side by goal difference.

After the first match at Parc des Princes, which ended in a 2:2 draw, Napoli changed nothing in their formation. Carlo Ancelotti went out on the game with the same 4-4-2 formation with Insigne and Mertens on the edge and Callejon and Ruiz on the wings. The center of midfield consisted of Hamsik and Allan.

PSG had some changes compared to the previous match. Only Mbappe worked in attack and Cavani remained on the bench. Instead of the Uruguayan Tuchel let out Draxler in the midfield, who worked there together with Veratti and Meunier moved to the left wing. The French team played in 3-4-2-1 formation as if continuing the second half of the domestic match between Napoli.

Thanks to the idea of the German manager of the Parisians for the match, the guests possessed the ball in the first half for almost 60% of all time, while at home they didn’t have such total dominance. Thanks to creative attacking midfielders, PSG variably changed formation from attacking 3-4-2-1 to a more defensive 5-3-1-1. Because of that the guests had advantage at Napoli’s penalty area, which turned into a goal from the right wing of defense of the hosts. Maksimovic did not work until the end with Mbappe and the Frenchman performed a goal pass on a free Bernat in the penalty area in a compensated time.

In the second half Napoli went ahead and drove PSG to their penalty box. In the first fifteen minutes of the second half the hosts shot 11 times on PSG’s goal. The experience and reaction of Gianluigi Buffon helped the guests; however, Thiago Silva’s mistake nullified all efforts of the Italian goalkeeper. THe Brazilian accepted the ball unconfidently and Callejon sneaked up on him from behind, having fouled on him. It should be noted that during the pass the Spaniard was in offside, but the referee did not see that. As a result, the realized penalty of Lorenzo Insigne.

After the goal Napoli calmed down and ended the match in the usual compact manner, basically not creating any moments at the alien goal and having not allowed danger at their penalty box.

Thanks to the draw Napoli have risen to the first place, having taken advantage of Liverpool’s loss in Belgrade. The Reds and the Neapolitans have six points each and PSG occupy third position conceding them one point. In the last two encounters Ancelotti’s team will go to Anfield and host Crvena Zvezda; therefore the side has the chances on qualification from the group. As for PSG, TUchel has a match with Liverpool at Parc des Princes and a voyage to Serbia ahead. Therefore both teams cannot be disregarded. Everything has just started in the group C.
