Liverpool lacked playmaker

Liverpool finished second in the 2018/19 season, losing the first position to the hegemon from Manchester - Manchester City.

Until the last round, the struggle between the two teams from the Premier League was heated to the limit. At the same time, both clubs did not represent the capital of England. Liverpool and Manchester City showed the football world that you can't relax for a minute during the whole season. More about this further.

Liverpool last summer carried out a perfect transfer campaign. The team was joined by Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Keita and Shaqiri. The latter, it would seem, was supposed to replace Fekir, whom the Reds refused because of chronic knee injury. The stake was made on the experience of the Swiss in the Premier League, as well as on his value, which seemed ridiculous for the top English championship - less than 20 million pounds.

At the beginning of the season Shaqiri was not bad, he even scored two victory goals in a derby against Manchester United and fired Jose Mourinho. However, later he began to fade, causing Klopp to put him on the bench. Shaqiri was a substitute for Salah, but the Egyptian did not need to be replaced, becoming the top goalscorer in the Premier League. Together with team-mate Mane and partner on the continent Aubameyang, the players scored 22 goals each.

The defense of Liverpool drew special attention. It was not for nothing that Van Dijk was recognized as the best player of the season, and Alisson defended 21 matches “to zero” by taking the Golden Glove. Beside the Dutch defender Matip turned into Alessandro Nesta from Milan, and Lovren began to lose position much less often.

But for Liverpool to win this season of the championship neither bench was enough, nor a quality playmaker. Keita gained shape only at the end of the season, and Henderson showed that he knows how to connect to the attack only in the second leg with Barcelona. Of course, playing as against the Catalans in every match is impossible. The Reds lost only to Manchester City this season at Etihad and played seven matches in a draw. In addition to a tie with Chelsea (1:1), Man Utd (0:0), Arsenal (1:1) and the Citizens (0:0), the Reds lost six points in matches with Everton (0:0), West Ham (1:1) and Leicester (1:1). It was in these matches that Liverpool did not have enough ideas in the attack than Coutinho successfully coped with. However, at Melwood there was a player whose name was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Last season, the Englishman was injured in the Champions League semi-final and was out for a year, returning to the field in a game against Newcastle.

Chamberlain, though not fully, would have replaced Fekir and would have been better than Shaqiri, who never understood what Klopp needed. Liverpool dropped out of the domestic cup in the early stages, preferring the championship and the Champions League. Now the Merseysiders are waiting for the final against Tottenham, whom they defeated twice this season, and which look like Liverpool in the past. Given the loss of Spurs squad people, Liverpool became a clear favorite in the confrontation and should at least to win the eared cup from the second attempt. The odds for the last match of the season are as follows: Liverpool to win in full-time – 2,00; Tottenham to win in full-time 4,00; a draw in full-time – 3,40; a Liverpool victory in the tournament 1,50; Tottenham victory in the tournament – 2,70.
